Century Acquires More Than 10 Million Pops in LMDS Auction.

) has been awarded 32 Local Multipoint Distribution System (wireless) Local Multipoint Distribution System - (LMDS) A broadband wireless technology.  (LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) A digital wireless transmission system that works in the 28 GHz range in the U.S. and 24-40 GHz overseas. It requires line of sight between transmitter and receiving antenna, which can be from one to four miles apart ) licenses in the FCC's A and B band auction. With the purchase, Century gained approximately 10.6 million pops (the portion of the population of the service area based on ownership interest) paying an average price of $.92 per pop. Century's total investment will be approximately $9.7 million.

This technology will allow Century to offer wireless broadband High-speed wireless transmission of data. What is "high" speed is always a changing number. Wireless systems are typically slower than land-based, wireline networks. In the past, wireless broadband started at 250 Kbps, whereas land-based broadband was generally considered to start at T1  services such as high-speed Internet/Intranet access, data transfer and video transmission. The LMDS spectrum blocks are significantly broader than other types of licensed spectrum.

The majority of the licenses complement existing Century operating areas, and cover 32 Basic Trading Areas (BTAs) in Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota and Mississippi.
