Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of Centura Software (Nasdaq:CNTR CNTR Center CNTR Container CNTR Control CNTR Counter ), in which he talks at length about the company's future. The entire 3,900-word interview is available free online at http://www.twst.com/ceos.htm Broomfield states, "We're the 17th largest software company in Silicon Valley and the 34th largest software company in the world. Our strategy is to mobilize mo·bi·lize v. 1. To make mobile or capable of movement. 2. To restore the power of motion to a joint. 3. To release into the body, as glycogen from the liver. the enterprise. What that fundamentally means is taking existing business systems and applications pushing those systems out to the Internet and to mobile devices." Broomfield explains, "We are what we call carrier-and-network- independent. We inter-operate, if you will, with each of the carriers. We operate on today's spread spectrum, we will operate on 2G, on 3G, on GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. , because we're basically a data transport mechanism. The way to sort of metaphorically understand it is: all those people, all of our complementary players, will be building the infrastructure, building the roads, the highways; we'll be basically building the cars that ride on top of the highways. So as the highways get better, our technology gets more and more and more important." Looking forward, Broomfield states, "I'd like to be, I'll call it 'relevant' to the IT industry as it relates to mobile computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings . What I mean by that is that there are lots of companies out there, and if any one of them ended up going under or getting acquired, we would hardly see a dent in the world of IT. 'Relevance,' to me, means that you have an impact. And that impact implies in the hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue, so that's where I'd like to see myself in the next three years."
