GATESHEAD councillors have given the green light to a major redevelopment of the borough's community centres.

and improve 30 community centres at their meeting yesterday at Gateshead Civic Centre.

Their approval followed a comprehensive survey of all the Council's buildings which established the amount of work that would be required to bring the buildings up to a reasonable standard.

A wide range of improvements are proposed, with some community centres receiving new kitchen facilities, improved heating systems and better decoration.
