IT WAS a case of the surf's up on Tyneside For the 1885–1918 parliamentary constituency, see .
Tyneside is a conurbation in northern England, which is home to over 80% of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear.
. Work started on a new multi-millionpound leisure centre that will feature the North East's first indoor surfboarding site.

The centre at Heworth will include a Flow Rider system which will generate waves that can be used for body boarding and surfing surfing, sport of gliding toward the shore on a breaking wave. Surfers originally used long, cumbersome wooden boards but now ride lightweight synthetic boards that allow a greater degree of maneuverability.  suitable for all ages and abilities.

A traditional sodcutting ceremony signalled the start of work on the development.

The honours were carried out by Gateshead Council cab-inemember Coun Peter Mole and Professor Gian Francesco Lupattelli, president of the European Capital of Sport Association.

Prof Lupattelli was visiting the Heworth site as part of a visit by the assessment panel from the European Capitals of Sport Association considering Gateshead's bid to become European City of Sport 2010.
