Central Texas Communications (CTC CTC - Cornell Theory Center ), a regional full-service telecommunications carrier, today announced the successful deployment of third-generation Local Multipoint Distribution Services LMDS is a broadband wireless access technology governed by the IEEE and is outlined by the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee through the efforts of the IEEE 802.16.1 Task Group.

LMDS commonly operates on microwave frequencies across the 26GHz and 29GHz bands.

The Goldthwaite, Texas-based competitive carrier is using its LMDS spectrum to deliver both broadband data and integrated voice services to its business customers.

A wholly-owned affiliate of Central Texas Telephone Cooperative Inc., CTC acquired 28 and 31 GHz licenses in 1998 covering 19 counties throughout central Texas. In late 1999, the company deployed an initial network using another vendor's first-generation equipment, but after exhausting that system's capacity, CTC decided to conduct an industry-wide evaluation of LMDS vendors to upgrade their network. After assessing product features and roadmaps from numerous vendors, in July 2001 CTC selected Ensemble and began the San Angelo and Goldthwaite rollouts as the initial deployment phase.

"After a complete review of LMDS products on the market, we see Ensemble's Fiberless system as the clear choice for CTC because of its unparalleled capacity and feature richness -- both critical elements in building a future-proof broadband network," said Delbert Wilson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and general manager of Central Texas Telephone Cooperative Inc. "Throughout our relationship, Ensemble has proven to be a strategic vendor and partner for CTC not only by the performance of its products, but also through the strong commitment and high-level of support shown by its management and technical teams. Given this leap forward for our network, CTC is extremely excited about the wonderful opportunity that next-generation LMDS services provides us and our customers as we continue expanding our CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  operations."

Having completed the first phase of deployment, CTC already has signed up more than 40 business customers and expects this number to increase further given the significant demand for quality broadband services in its markets. Additional full-scale LMDS network rollouts of the Fiberless system are planned for the cities of Brownwood and Brady, Texas Brady is a city in McCulloch County, Texas and is the closest city to the geographical center of the state. Brady refers to itself as "The Heart of Texas". The population was 5,523 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of McCulloch CountyGR6.  over the next two years. As a competitive carrier with a diversified network, CTC also provides service through its existing fiber, T1 and one-way wireless cable infrastructure.

enabled by the much higher capacity, efficiency and lower total cost of ownership benefits of third generation systems. As a result, the company is well positioned to meet current and future demands for integrated data and voice services and capacity requirements.

For one CTC customer that is supplying Web and application hosting/development services to San Angelo-area businesses, having quality broadband access See broadband and wireless broadband.  is mission critical. , CEO of SourceLink. "CTC's LMDS service allows SourceLink to bring leading-edge technology, concepts and cost savings to our customers."

"CTC is proving that a profitable business case can be achieved by using LMDS spectrum to satisfy the substantial pent-up demand for broadband connections by businesses," added Dave Twyver, president and CEO of Ensemble. "At a time when the U.S. LMDS market is in a state of turmoil, CTC exemplifies the new generation of competitive carriers that will succeed by deploying scalable, high-capacity and lower-cost networks -- market by market and customer by customer."
