Central Park on the Hudson.

Group wants massive West Side playground

An advocacy group consisting of several private sector real estate interests is lobbying for an ambitious park on the Hudson River Hudson River

River, New York, U.S. Originating in the Adirondack Mountains and flowing for about 315 mi (507 km) to New York City, it was named for Henry Hudson, who explored it in 1609. Dutch settlement of the Hudson valley began in 1629.
. That group, the Friends of Hudson River Park Hudson River Park is a waterside park on the Hudson River that extends from 59th Street south to Battery Park in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Bicycle and pedestrian paths span the park north to south, opening up the waterfront for recreational use.  (FOHP), includes Douglas Durst on its board of directors.

FOHP wants the city to build a five-mile, 550-acre park along the shores of the Hudson River that would stretch from Battery Park City all the way to 59th Street. The project would be managed by the Hudson River Park Trust, a joint city/state public corporation.

Two weeks ago, the group hosted a breakfast at Pier 81. Among those present were Arthur Imperatore, Jr. of New York New York, state, United States

"What Central Park has been to New York since 1860, Hudson River Park can be for future generations. But we have to make sure that the Park is built," said Durst, speaking at the event.

To be sure, several of the directors have vested financial interests in completing the park. Circle Line, New York Waterway, and Chelsea Piers Chelsea Piers, officially Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex, is a series of sports and entertainment buildings constructed on four adjoining piers on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City.  are all represented on the board of directors. Even a political group -- the West Side Republican Club -- has a seat on the board. But there are also several representatives from Community Board #4 on the ad hoc For this purpose. "This group is all-encompassing. We are an interesting group -- grass-roots to corporate," said John Doswell, the chairman of the FOHP, who added that, in his view, "we are making progress."

For those developing the far western confines of Manhattan, a finished park bodes well. As it stands now, the water's edge north of 23rd street is a morass of sunken piers with little scenic value. That could change in the near future if FOHP's efforts are successful.

According to Doswell's estimate, the park could be done by 2005.
