Central Newspapers to close its afternoon Phoenix Gazette and to realign its morning Arizona Republic.


INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1997--Central Newspapers, Inc. announced that it will close its Phoenix afternoon newspaper, The Phoenix Gazette The Phoenix Gazette was a newspaper published in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. It was founded in 1881, and was known in its early years as the Phoenix Evening Gazette.

It was purchased by the owners of its rival Arizona Republic around 1930.

The Arizona Republic plans to simplify the newsroom management structure by eliminating two levels of management and will introduce the "team concept" to the newsroom. It also plans to expand local news coverage, raise performance standards for journalists, use new pagination (1) Page numbering.

The morning Arizona Republic has shown excellent circulation growth in the ever-expanding Phoenix market.

"The closing of the afternoon newspaper should be considered as one part of a larger shift in our Phoenix resources in order to gather news better, present it better and provide a better service to our readers. We will be able to concentrate our resources and energy on continuing the growth of the morning and Sunday Republic," Mr. Weil said.
