Central Maine Power Selects Intergraph for Asset Information Management System.

FRAMME Product Suite Offers Enterprisewide Solution

Central Maine Power (CMP) of Augusta, Maine, has selected products and services from Intergraph Software Solutions for development and implementation of an Asset Information Management System (AIMS). The enterprisewide solution is based on Intergraph's leading facilities information management software, FRAMME(TM), on the Microsoft Windows NT(R) operating system. In addition, CMP will purchase FRAMME Lite for remote design on laptops in the field and Field View for general query and viewing.

Intergraph is joined in the project by Computer Language Research Inc. (CLRI) of Carrollton, Texas. CLRI's InSource(R) client/server Utility Fixed Asset Management System (UFAMS), a key software component in this project, will be used to improve and automate CMP's management of 5 million continuing property records. Intergraph's FRAMME will interface with InSource UFAMS to link fixed asset data with CMP's financial data.

"We were looking for a streamlined solution to benefit a range of users, from the accounting department to our field district office. Our objective is to manage -- from a PC on the desktop -- all the fixed assets of the company from the substation to the customer," said Bob Moore, co-project leader from CMP's operations division. "Our total solution will link our asset management and financial models to enhance decision support and benefit our bottom line."

AIMS will involve development of an Automated Mapping/Facilities Management/Geographic Information System (AM/FM/GIS) and integration of CMP's work management, outage management and financial systems.

Donna McNally, co-project leader from CMP's information services division, added, "After an extensive evaluation process, it was clear to us that Intergraph had the best total solutions approach and the most experience putting solutions of this size and scope into production." CMP will consolidate 38 separate operations systems, eliminate unnecessary legacy systems and give the entire organization access to asset-related information. "Intergraph's integrated tool set will give the entire organization query and viewing capabilities from any desktop," she said.

Unique Implementation

"This is a different implementation from what we normally see at a utility," said Jay Stinson, executive consultant at Intergraph. "The operations and information systems departments are the main drivers at CMP instead of the engineering department. They are focusing on the asset management aspects of their business. Intergraph's flexibility is enabling them to use our products and services in unique ways."

As an integrated datastore, AIMS will interact with systems including customer services, computer aided dispatch work requests, work management, materials management, financial systems, and hand-held devices.

For example, field designers will use FRAMME Lite for work in the field and then upload the information into AIMS from docking stations. This will promote faster, more accurate and more efficient facility design and upgrades.

AIMS users will be able to make geographical-based data queries and get financial information about facilities. This will be especially useful in decision making regarding things such as stranded investments and facilities improvements.

Additionally, Intergraph is subcontracting the data conversion services for the AM/FM/GIS portion of AIMS to Cartotech of San Antonio, Texas. Cartotech will migrate the continuing property records from a mainframe to Oracle tables. As Cartotech converts the primary features, these tables will be used to update the AIMS FRAMME rulebase.

The entire first phase of the AIMS project should be completed in the fall of 1997 with total implementation in mid-1998. The project is a joint effort of CMP's operations, accounting and information technology departments.
