Central Iowa Health and Human Service Organizations Awarded Sizable Grants.

In an effort to support Central Iowa in providing the basics all people need for a healthy life, the Principal Financial Group(R) and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. provided grants totaling $678,000 during first quarter 2005 to 69 Des Moines-area health and human service organizations.

 area. A SART is a specially trained group of nurse examiners who respond to victims of sexual assault. The SART model is used nationally, and does not currently exist in the Des Moines area as a consistent solution among local hospital emergency rooms.

--Parents Anonymous of Iowa, Inc. - Grant funds will support expansion of the organization's "Parenting Way" curriculum. A total of 200 families in Central Iowa are targeted to be served over the next year by this program as it works to build strong parental competencies and strengthen relationships in troubled families.

--Reggie's Place - A project of Iowa Homeless Youth Centers Street Outreach Program, Reggie's Place is a drop-in center where homeless and runaway young people find support and services to stay off the streets. Grant funds from The Principal will support the development of new educational programs, including a 10-week life skills course, sexual education and a course to help teach listening skills and techniques to build mutual respect. In 2005, the Reggie's Place project is expected to help the Street Outreach Program place 228 young people in emergency shelter beds and make over 1,600 referrals for support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services .

--Youth and Shelter Services, Inc. - First started in 2004 and a project of the Iowa Homeless Youth Shelter, "Money Matters on the Street" is a financial literacy program for homeless teens. The program provides personal financial education to help homeless youth understand the financial realities of independent life.

The Principal and the Principal Financial Group Foundation also awarded a total of $100,500 in health and human service grants in other communities with a large employee presence, including Cedar Falls, Mason City and Ottumwa, Iowa; Appleton, Wis.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Grand Island, Neb.; Middletown, Conn.; Phoenix/Tucson, Ariz.; Spokane, Wash.; and Wilmington, Del.
