Central Indiana update: the region's top business stories.

Manufacturing news. Printing and graphics firm Pratt Corp. invested $6.5 million to refurbish the former Maytag building at 30th Street and Shadeland Avenue, giving it expanded space. It also boosted employment from about 175 to more than 300. Aero Industries Inc. invested $6.6 million in a new corporate headquarters and manufacturing plant where it makes tarp systems and other truck accessories. Employment has increased from 75 to about 110.

Knauf Insulation, Shelbyville's largest employer with a workforce of 850, is building a new $150 million plant adjacent to its current site for its production of light-density residential insulation. It's slated to open by early 2008. Indiana Automotive Fasteners in Greenfield is doubling its size, adding nearly 400,000 square feet of space in a $19 expansion project. Currently employing 265, the growth could mean another 300 jobs, says Dennis Maloy, executive director of the Hancock Economic Development Council.

Greenfield is also the new corporate headquarters for Modernfold, a 35-employee company making moveable wall systems.

In Lebanon, Aurora Truck Parts and Accessories has moved from Lafayette to the Lebanon Business Park, investing $8 million in its new distribution and light-assembly facility. The company employs 75 and makes truck parts.

 USA in Mooresville has completed a $10 million addition and boosted employment to 330.

Distribution central. Logistics remains a top industry, with about 18 million square feet built. "It's a sector that continues to grow," says Harold Gutzwiller, executive director of the Hendricks County Economic Development Partnership. The latest is an 812,000-square-foot facility in Air Tech Business Park in Plainfield, being developed and constructed by Browning Investments.

Currently in the design phase, Browning is also planning a new 1,100-acre industrial site called Centralogistics Park, north of the Air Tech

site in Hendricks County.

UNFI UNFI United Natural Foods Inc , natural food product distributor, is now occupying a 270,000-square-foot site in Greenwood, employing 250.

In Mount Comfort, S. Abraham & Sons is spending about $6 million to open a 225,000-square-foot dry/cold/ frozen food logistics center in the Mount Comfort Commercial Park. It will employ 125.

Retail deals. Two Indianapolis-based companies are expanding. Simon Property Group Simon Property Group, Inc. (NYSE: SPG), also known as SIMON, an S&P 500 company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, is the largest developer of shopping malls in the United States. Simon Property Group, Inc. , the nation's biggest mall developer that employs about 850 in Indianapolis, is spending $55 million to build a new downtown headquarters across from the Indiana Statehouse The Indiana Statehouse (or State House)[2] is the state capitol building of the U.S. state of Indiana. And Hat World invested $1.8 million on its new corporate headquarters and facility where it makes branded athletic headware. Hat World has increased employment by about 100 and now has a workforce of more than 300.

Carmel's new Clay Terrace lifestyle center features 450,000 square feet of retail space and 70,000 square feet of office space.
