Central Command Releases Its Dirty Dozen -- Top 12 -- Viruses For May 2001.

The report, coined the "Dirty Dozen," is based on the number of virus occurrences confirmed through Central Command's Emergency Virus Response Team tracking.

The table below represents the most prevalent viruses for May 2001. The ranking is determined by the amount of virus occurrences reported, number one being the most frequent.

"The month of May was once again dominated by mass mailing viruses," said Steven Sundermeier, product manager at Central Command, Inc. "Unfortunately, it only takes a few careless users that don't have up-to- date virus protection for these viruses to spread rapidly worldwide," stated Sundermeier.

VBS See VBScript. .Hompage.B@mm, a mass mailing worm generated using the (K)alamar virus creation toolkit and W32.Magistr.A@mm rounded out the top three reported viruses for the month.

A new addition to the Dirty Dozen was VBS.Mawanella.A@mm, a politically driven e-mail worm also generated using the (K)alamar virus creation toolkit as its source. Additionally, a virus hoax A computer virus hoax is a false email message warning the recipient of a virus that is going around. The message usually serves as a chain e-mail that tells the recipient to forward it to everyone they know.  involving the file Sulfbnk.exe started circulating worldwide, causing much panic and confusion amongst computer users.
