Central City News: Tuk-ing on down town; CITY CENTRE.


BRITAIN'S first motorised rickshaw service started yesterday and is set to expand into Birmingham city centre.

The three-wheeled mopeds are known as tuk-tuks, which is the sound their engines make.

Started by Dominic Ponniah, the service was launched in Brighton and is expected to spread later to Birmingham, London, Bristol, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

Mr Ponniah has imported 12 tuk-tuks from Pune, in India. The rickshaw fare will be pounds 2.50 for adults and pounds 1.50 for children.

The tuk-tuks, which run on compressed natural gas Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a substitute for gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel. It is considered to be an environmentally "clean" alternative to those fuels. It is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed by methane (CH4 , can go at speeds of up to 35mph.
