Central City News: Poster focus on ordinary heroes; HANDSWORTH: Pair find themselves on giant advertising hoardings.

ORDINARY folk are finding themselves in a growing hall of fame to highlight all that is good about living in inner city Birmingham.

Security guard Hector Pinkney and Karanpreet Singh Chawal, of the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras, have found themselves pictured on giant advertising hoardings in the north west of the city, known as the SRB6 area.

They have joined other residents, such as a barber, a head teacher and an eight-year-old schoolgirl in SRB6's Smiles Better campaign to promote the Handsworth, Winson Green Winson Green is a loosely-defined area in the west of the city of Birmingham, England. It is part of the ward of Soho.

It is the location of HM Prison Birmingham (known locally as Winson Green Prison or "the Green") and City Hospital (formerly Dudley Road Hospital).
 and Soho areas.

Hector, a 54-year-old security guard at Handsworth Library and a popular community leader, unveiled his poster at the junction of Holyhead Road and Park Lane.

He is known to everyone as Mr Handsworth and recently won a council award for both his work and the many community projects he's involved with.

He said: "I'm very proud to be part of this area and have always tried to unite the community as my parents did before me when they settled here."

Hector runs the Dodo community project with his sister Dolores Dolores (or Delores) was a common given name (until the 1960s in the USA); it is cognate with the English word "dolorous" (meaning sorrowful) and equivalent in meaning.  which helps to provide mentoring and role models for young people.

Dr Sarindar Singh Sahota, who chairs SRB6, said: "With this campaign we are trying to show that community cohesion Community cohesion refers to the aspect of togetherness exhibited by members of a community. Characterised by similar cultures, lifestyes, family lineage or relations, neighbourhood or any other bonding factors of human living, togetherness in communities is a very cherished trait  is working in Handsworth.

"People have the perception that different communities are fighting but this is simply not true. Everyone is working together to make the area a better place to live and work."

Coun Ken Hardeman, cabinet member for regeneration, added: "SRB6 funding has had a beneficial impact on the area and I'm glad that local people will be able to see this thanks to the poster campaign."

There are now 11 posters situated on key arterial routes into the area and also in shops, schools and other public buildings.
