Central City News: Bobby sticks oar in to save cadets; LADYWOOD: Awards ceremony honours police officers and good neighbours.

A BOBBY has been honoured for his community work after he saved a youth centre from closure, transforming the lives of teenagers.

The Ladywood-based Sea Cadets Sea Cadets are generally members of a Sea Cadet Corps, a formal cadet organisation of young people with an interest in their national navy. The organization may be sponsored by the Navy or Naval supporter's organisation, such as a Navy League in the UK, or similar organisation.  unit was close to shutting its doors two years ago until PC David Dargie stepped in to help.

Now the centre opens three times a week and is used by more than 40 youngsters aged ten to 18 who are taught sailing, canoeing canoeing, sport of propelling a canoe through water. John MacGregor, an English barrister and founder of the Royal Canoe Club (est. 1865), is generally credited with being the initiator of modern sport canoeing. , rowing and sail boarding.

PC Dargie helped raise more than pounds 70,000 and raised the standards of the centre by purchasing new safety equipment.

At a special awards ceremony on Wednesday, PC Dargie was awarded the force's Sharon Loveitt Trophy, presented annually to the officer who has made an outstanding contribution and achievement in connection with police charity work.

They both support the Practical Care Project, which offers vulnerable people and victims of crime-free home security upgrades including alarms, door chains and locks.

Since the initiative started in 2002, Mr Carter and Mr Robinson have helped 1,600 homes and committed more than 900 hours of their own time to boost security.

Insp Ian Iliffe, who nominated them for the award, said: "Their dedication over the years has been remarkable and their professional, caring, modest approach to their work is an example to us all."

Aston-based Det Sgt Colin Gibbs and PCs Jacklene Laurent and Carla Lloyd-Phillips were presented with Royal Humane Society The Royal Humane Society was founded in England in 1774 as the Society for the Recovery of Persons Apparently Drowned, for the purpose of rendering "first aid" in cases of drowning and for restoring life by artificial means to those apparently drowned.  Awards for saving a woman's life in June 2006.

The officers answered reports of a woman lying in the middle of the road.

Even though she had no pulse, they managed to revive her and she later made a full recovery.
