Central Carolina Technical College Transports Campus Overseas; Students Based Near and Far Connect with Campus Pipeline.

Shaw Air Force Base personnel make up just nine percent of Central Carolina Technical College enrollment, but they illustrate the great advantage online access to campus services provides students learning from a distance.

Central Carolina students located near the Sumter, S.C. campus and around the world now have easy access to campus services and their campus community via the Campus Pipeline(TM) Web platform.

"Now that we have Campus Pipeline at Central Carolina, I'm much more connected to campus," said Marion Barr, a student formerly on military duty at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy.

Barr is now working for NATO in Verona, Italy and continuing with the completion of his associate degree requirements. "I know what is happening on campus, I can communicate easily with my instructors and advisor -- it's really helped me to stay motivated and continue with my studies while I'm away."

Barr, and other students located near Central Carolina's Sumter campus, overseas or at any of its 14 outreach facilities, can now use the secure class-specific chat site to communicate with instructors from any computer with Internet access. They can also use Campus Pipeline at Central Carolina to access campus email, campus news and events, online registration and academic records.

Students local to the Central Carolina Technical College campus also enjoy the school's new services. Central Carolina employee and student, Delphina Downie, lives in Sumter, but her family lives in New York. She said, "The Campus Pipeline email will help me stay in closer touch with my family.

"They couldn't believe a small school like Central Carolina could offer such a rich service to the employees and students. I agree with President Raffield that we as employees should involve ourselves in spreading the news in the community; it will help recruit more people for our institution. I am truly blessed and grateful to be in the midst of all Central Carolina Technical College has to offer."

Delphina works in the maintenance department and is pursuing a degree in office systems technology. She continued her comments with, "Special thanks to Dr. Raffield for seeing the future and incorporating this in our College. Campus Pipeline has really changed my life!"

Central Carolina Technical is the first college in South Carolina, and among the first colleges in the nation, to introduce an official campus intranet powered by Campus Pipeline. More than 500 campuses have licensed the Campus Pipeline Web platform, and more than 50 schools are in the process of customizing it to meet the needs of their campus communities.

In addition to the deployment of Campus Pipeline, the college also implemented SCT's Web for Students for Plus2000(TM) and unveiled a new Web site, collaboratively engaging the faculty, students and staff in all phases of the e-community construction project.

Next steps for CCTC include integrating faculty and staff information systems created by SCT into the Campus Pipeline Web platform to further increase the connections established between faculty, staff and students through Campus Pipeline. SCT has been a major partner with Central Carolina for the past 15 years in providing administrative software and professional services.

During the project rollout, Central Carolina students were able to register for summer classes and retrieve their academic records for the first time via the Web. Instructors quickly adopted the platform and began immediate incorporation of their course materials into the system with little or no training.

Central Carolina plans to implement SCT's Web for Faculty and The Learning Suite very soon to continue the development of its distributed learning environment.
