Centillium's Entropia III delivers more than 1,000 VoIP channels per chip and the industry's lowest power consumption.

, recently introduced Entropia III, its fourth generation voice-over-IP (VoIP) processor, the highest density, lowest power, and most cost-effective system-on-a-chip solution available on the market.

Entropia III also shatters previous performance and power records by providing 28 GMACs of DSP processing and 1 GOP of network processing at under 3 milliwatts per channel for a complete solution. Such breakthroughs in performance and power efficiency represent a major leap forward in communication systems design enabling system vendors to meet mainstream needs of the VoIP market with highly scalable, efficient and low-cost systems.

"Centillium's Entropia III raises the bar for on-chip processing performance in VoIP infrastructure applications," said Gerry Kaufhold, Principal Analyst at In-Stat/MDR. "The industry will benefit because VoIP is becoming cost-competitive with TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. ."

Entropia III's hardware acceleration, TDM cross-connects, and multiple packet interfaces are embedded into the solution to reduce board component count, provide flexibility and offer significant savings. Integration of DSPs and network processing on the same chip offers improvement in delay optimization, a key factor in achieving carrier-class voice quality.

A comprehensive suite of vocoders and concurrent support for VoIP over Ethernet and AAL (ATM Adaption Layer) The part of the ATM protocol that breaks up application packets into 48-byte payloads which become ATM cells when the 5-byte headers are attached. The AAL resides between the higher layer transport protocols and the ATM layer. 5, as well as VoATM AAL1 and AAL2, highlight the rich feature set and flexibility that system vendors require to migrate to next generation wireline and wireless networks.

For Centillium's existing customers, Entropia III offers a comprehensive programmable high-level application program interface (API) that maintains backward compatibility to previous APIs and enables easy migration from previous Entropia solutions to the new platform.
