Centex Construction Company President Recognized With National Construction Award.

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 1, 2001

John Tarpey, president and CEO of Centex Construction Company's Mid Atlantic Division, was presented with the Walter A. Nashert, Sr., Constructor Award at the American Institute of Constructors' (AIC) national conference in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 17th.

This award, AIC's highest honor, is presented to a talented person who has gained high visibility in the construction industry and has a reputation of integrity and fair dealing.

Upon receiving the award, Tarpey spoke about the importance of leadership and developing individuals in the construction industry, saying, "The challenge for us is to develop leaders who can spark the level of consciousness in employees that helps them realize their strengths and achieve their goals, both personally and professionally. We must recognize that human capital is the next level of competitive advantage."

Tarpey began his career with Centex in 1978, working in estimating and operations during his first five years, then leaving for an 11-year tenure with a national general contractor starting in 1983. There he advanced to executive vice president and director of operations.

With a proven track record in senior management, Tarpey returned to Centex Construction Group in 1996 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, and was appointed president and CEO of Centex Construction Company's Mid Atlantic Division in 1997.

Major projects for which Tarpey has been responsible include the Advanced System Integration Laboratory (design-build) in Patuxent River, Md.; the New National Academy of Sciences Building (design-build) in Washington, D.C.; the National Archives II in College Park, Md.; the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; the Ronald Reagan State Office Building in Los Angeles, Calif.; and One Freedom Square, AboveNet ISX-VA-3 and Plaza America, all in Reston, Va.

Tarpey serves on the board of directors for both the District of Columbia Building Industry Association and the Virginia Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors. He earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and completed the Executive Program at the University of Michigan.

In 1993 he was a nominee for Engineering News-Record's "Construction Man of the Year" Award. He has been a speaker/panelist for topics including partnering, design-build, company culture and career development for numerous construction industry conferences and seminars.
