The Midwestern League champion Axemen, who ended their season with a 13-2-2 mark, dominated play for most of the afternoon, finishing with 27 shots on goal, including several near-misses.

`South Eugene is the strongest team we've played all year,' Centennial coach Justin Rosenblad said. `They had us on our heels for most of the match. We were fortunate to get through.'

The Axemen spent the next 60 minutes searching for the equalizer, which finally came in the 72nd minute when Barnes' free kick from 30 yards out was deftly headed into the net by Risley. It was the third time in the playoffs that the Barnes-to-Risley connection paid off with a goal.

`In the second half, we played fantastic soccer,' South Eugene coach Colin McMillen said. `The kids did everything they possibly could to get us back in the game.'

Unfortunately for the Axemen, the officials ruled that Sorenson had come off the line early and the Eagles were awarded another try, and this time the shot found the back of the net for a 1-1 tie.

The shootout was deadlocked at 3-3 after successful penalty kicks from South Eugene's Sam Moulton and Risley, before Patrick Walro's shot bounced off the right post and Centennial converted to take a 4-3 edge.

After Barnes made South's final shot, junior Josh Cameron stepped up and drilled the ball into the net to give the Eagles a 5-4 advantage, and the Centennial celebration began.
