Cenatek Previews New Rocket Drive SSD at Networld+Interop to Demonstrate Industry's Fastest Data-Access Speeds.

Networld+Interop Atlanta 2001

Booth No. 3049

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 2001

Rocket Drive's Patented, Bus-Attached Design Makes High-Performance,

Solid State Disk Technology Affordable for the First Time

Cenatek(TM), a provider of high-speed, high-performance storage products and services, is previewing its new Rocket Drive(TM) solid state disk (SSD See solid state disk. ) at Networld+Interop to demonstrate the industry's fastest data-access times.

On display in booth No. 3049, the Rocket Drive is a new high-speed storage device that is thousands of times faster than conventional hard disk drives, harnessing all the performance advantages of SSD technology at only a fraction of the cost.

Cenatek will begin taking Rocket Drive orders directly from the company Web site at http://www.cenatek.com in October 2001. The company is planning to make the device available through a network of strategic partners and distributors later this Fall.

"The Rocket Drive represents Cenatek's first step in making high-speed storage available and affordable," said Jason Caulkins, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and founder of Cenatek, and the lead architect behind the Rocket Drive. "Through a patented bus-attached form factor, Cenatek makes high-speed, solid state storage a practical, 'plug and play' reality for workstation users, performance junkies and small-to-medium sized businesses. At the same time, the Rocket Drive serves as a potential building block for larger enterprise storage applications."

Vastly Different From Conventional SSDs

The Rocket Drive delivers performance of up to 100,000 transactions per second In a very generic sense, the term Transactions Per Second refers to the number of atomic actions performed by certain entity per second. In a more restrictied view, the term is usually used by DBMS vendor and user community to refer to the number of database transactions performed  to achieve the fastest data-access speeds of any storage device available. Like other SSDs, it functions as a hard drive but stores data using memory chips rather than magnetic media. However, the Cenatek product is vastly different from conventional SSDs that attach to the host computer via channel technologies such as SCSI SCSI

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
and fibre. Instead, Rocket Drive attaches directly to the system's PCI bus PCI bus - Peripheral Component Interconnect  to reduce costs and significantly improve data transfer rates.

This bus-attached design enables the device to operate at high-performance bus speeds, whereas conventional, channel-attached SSDs are limited to the speed or I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

transfer rate allowed by the channel connection. The Rocket Drive's data transfer rates reach up to 132 MB per second (burst rate) and 80 to 100 MB per second (sustained rate), depending on system load.

The Rocket Drive's fault-tolerant design This article is about general fault-tolerant design theory. For specific implementations, see fault-tolerant system.
Fault-tolerant design refers to a method for designing a system so it will continue to operate, possibly at a reduced level (also known as graceful degradation),

adapter A device that allows one system to connect to and work with another. An adapter is often a simple circuit that converts one set of signals to another; however, the term often refers to devices which are more accurately called "controllers. , an internal NiMh battery and the system's own power supply. This design prevents any single point of failure, utilizing a patented back-up and restore system to ensure data protection. Installing the Rocket Drive takes less than five minutes and requires no special software.

Configurations and Pricing

Available in Fall 2001, the Rocket Drive will be offered in several configurations to meet the varying needs of Cenatek customers. With minimum memory configurations starting at 512 MB, Cenatek will also provide one-, two- and four-GB models.

Cenatek's groundbreaking, high-performance Rocket Drive is a fraction of the cost of traditional SSD technology. List prices will start at less than $2,000 for a 512 MB configuration.
