CenDyne Inc. today announced that it will expand its popular line of 4X DVD-R/RW drives with a new external drive with a USB 2.0/FireWire interface.

The external DVD recorder connects quickly and easily to a USB or FireWire port on a PC. The new drive comes with easy-to-use software for recording any type of video, photography, music or data onto DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) A write-once (read only) DVD disc for both movies and data endorsed by the DVD Forum. DVD-Rs are often called "DVD Dash Rs" or "DVD Minus Rs" to distinguish them from the competing "Plus R" format (see DVD+R). , DVD-RW (DVD-Read Write) A rewritable (re-recordable) DVD disc for both movies and data from the DVD Forum. Also called "DVD Dash RW" and "DVD Minus RW," DVD-RW uses phase change recording. The media hold 4.7GB per side and can be rewritten 1,000 times. , CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution.  and CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast.  media.

The new CenDyne 4X External DVD Recorder comes with easy-to-use Sonic(TM) MyDVD 4(TM) DVD authoring and recording software that allows consumers to archive their digital video home movies or create their own movies and burn them onto DVD media. The MyDVD software lets users capture video clips, transfer video, create and edit movies, add titles and other effects to movies and video, and burn images to a disc quickly and easily.

The drive also reads and writes to CD-R and CD-RW media and provides buffer under-run protection support. Nero Express, Nero Vision Express and InCD software also ship with the new drive for CD creation.

The new CenDyne 4X External DVD-R/RW Recorder comes complete with everything necessary to begin recording data right away, including media.

The CenDyne 4X DVD Recorder (model number CDI CDI compact disc interactive: a system for storing a mix of software, data, audio, and compressed video for interactive use under processor control  CD00224) will be available by April 15, 2003, at a suggested retail price of $349 at leading computer and consumer electronics retailers.
