As the DVD Forum A membership organization devoted to defining DVD standards for read-only, rewritable, write-once, video and audio use. Members participate in working groups to develop new standards.  releases the specifications for new high-speed discs for DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

recording, CenDyne Inc., in conjunction with its partner Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., announces that its DVD-R/RW drive A DVD drive that reads and writes DVD-RW and DVD-R media. It also typically reads DVD+RW and DVD+R media. See DVD drives, DVD and DVD-R/RAM drive and DVD+R/RW drive.  kits sold via retail that include a drive from Pioneer will require a firmware update in order to avoid potential damage to the units and discs. The update process is free and relatively simple, and it is extremely important for owners of such products to make sure it is completed prior to using any new high-speed discs for recording.

The DVD Forum has established new standards for high-speed recordable discs (4X for DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) A write-once (read only) DVD disc for both movies and data endorsed by the DVD Forum. DVD-Rs are often called "DVD Dash Rs" or "DVD Minus Rs" to distinguish them from the competing "Plus R" format (see DVD+R).  and 2X for DVD-RW (DVD-Read Write) A rewritable (re-recordable) DVD disc for both movies and data from the DVD Forum. Also called "DVD Dash RW" and "DVD Minus RW," DVD-RW uses phase change recording. The media hold 4.7GB per side and can be rewritten 1,000 times. ). Various media manufacturers have begun production of these discs that will soon be available in the marketplace. The source of the problem is a firmware "bug" in certain Pioneer DVD-R/RW drives used in CenDyne kits, and not with the high-speed media itself. As a result, use of the new high-speed discs for recording on these particular Pioneer products may cause damage to both the loaded disc and to the drive/recorder. The following CenDyne models may be affected:
-- CDI CD 00106

-- CDI CD 00125

-- CDI CD 00153

-- CDI CD 00176

-- CDI CD 00205

Anyone who owns or uses any of the above-listed products should conduct the free firmware update immediately, prior to using the new high-speed media. Firmware updates can be accomplished in the following two ways:

Via Internet download: Log on to www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/ OR http://www.cendyne.com/support.asp and note at the bottom of the page.

Via Disc: An update disc can be obtained via the website above or by calling toll-free 800-421-1623.

For computer drives, the update disc can be run on the host computer to complete the update.

More information about this issue is available on www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/. If users have any questions, they should call Pioneer's toll free hotline at 800-421-1623.
