Cemetery path notes sacrifices; Memorial bricks bear names of veterans who served nation.

 in place on the Veterans' Memorial Path at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, there is space for about 2,945 more.

"For every brick we sell, we can put in another 5 feet of sidewalk," said John Walker, a member of the Friends of the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.

The nonprofit Friends group, formed to support the cemetery and is in charge of the pathway, sponsored the official opening and dedication ceremony of the memorial path yesterday.

Cemetery manager James Brehio said the path is a personal tribute to those who served their country. While anyone can be memorialized through the purchase and placement of an inscribed in·scribe

 brick, a section is set aside for those service members killed in action, missing in action, or buried at sea.

The bricks cost $100 each, raising money to extend the path until it reaches the full 800 feet. "I think we're at 200 feet now," Mr. Walker said.

Once the path reaches its full length, the remaining funds raised will go toward any needs at the cemetery.

 Friends President Roger Tobia, the commemorating bricks are a lifetime gift. "If anything happened to a brick, we would replace it," he said.

State Rep. Robert L. Rice Jr., D-Gardner, presented the Friends committee with a certificate recognizing the dedication of the path; it is signed by Mr. Rice and Speaker of the House Salvatore F. DiMasi.

He said the memorial path is a fitting tribute to those who served in the military.
