CELSION CORPORATION (AMEX AMEX

Vargas, co- principal investigator for Celsion's Pivotal Breast Cancer Clinical Trials and Chief of Surgical Oncology at Harbor UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. It is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the United States and is the top hospital on the West Coast according to US News & World Report. , Torrance, CA, presented preliminary results for Celsion's investigational therapy for breast cancer treatment This article or section recently underwent a major revision or rewrite and needs further review. The mainstay of breast cancer treatment is surgery when the tumor is localized, with possible adjuvant hormonal therapy (with tamoxifen or an aromatase
at the 56th Annual Cancer Symposium, sponsored by the Society of Surgical Oncology, in Los Angeles, CA, on March 8, 2003.

In the study, conducted at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL, the University of Oklahoma University of Oklahoma, abbreviated OU, is a coeducational public research university located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma. , Oklahoma City and Halle Martin Luther Breast Center in Halle, Germany, 24 out of 25 early breast cancer cases (96%) treated with Adaptive Phased Array (APA (All Points Addressable) Refers to an array (bitmapped screen, matrix, etc.) in which all bits or cells can be individually manipulated.

) microwave therapy prior to lumpectomy achieved "clean" margins and required no further surgery to remove cancer cells not excised in the first surgery.

Nationally published surveys indicate that second incisions are required, following lumpectomies, in between 25-to 55% of all cases.

Dr. Vargas characterized these preliminary results as "encouraging" and added, "I expect the presentation to generate genuine enthusiasm in the medical community for Celsion's very promising minimally invasive approach." Dr Vargas went on to comment, "In 24 out of the 25 early stage breast cancer cases treated, post treatment pathology indicated that the margins of the treated tumor were clear of all viable cancer cells. As a result, the surgeons were not required to make further incisions to remove cancer cells remaining from the original surgery. While the preliminary results are not conclusive, we believe that, when the fully randomized study is completed and analyzed, the data, will demonstrate the effectiveness of this investigational treatment. If proven effective, this treatment would mark a significant step forward in the treatment of breast cancer and breast conservation. Preliminary results from this dose escalation study have been quite positive," concluded Dr. Vargas.

Typically, when a woman has breast cancer, she undergoes a lumpectomy to excise the cancer tumor. The goal is to completely remove the tumor and any viable cancer cells in the vicinity (margins) of the tumor, leaving the breast cancer free. Success of the surgery is verified by a post-operative examination of the excised tissue surrounding the tumor.

If the examination determines that viable cancer cells remain, the surgeon must make a second incision (re-excise) the breast to remove the remaining cancerous cells.

Celsion's unique procedure, which is performed in a outpatient setting prior to lumpectomy, uses Adaptive Phased Array (APA) technology to focus microwave heat in a highly targeted manner to kill cancer cells.

Originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. , this technology heats and destroys cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue intact.

Celsion is also conducting, in parallel, a second pivotal study using a combination of its APA technology in conjunction with chemotherapy to downstage large, advanced stage breast tumors, currently indicated for radical mastectomy, with the goal of shrinking the breast cancer lesion so that a breast conserving partial mastectomy or lumpectomy can be performed instead.

In addition to Harbor-UCLA in CA the Pivotal Phase II trials are now in progress at Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL; the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, OK; Comprehensive Breast Center of Coral Springs, Coral Springs, FL; Mroz-Baier Breast Care Clinic, Memphis, TN; Breast Care Specialists, P.C., Norfolk, VA and Pearl Place Breast Center, Tacoma, WA.

Anyone interested in participating in the trials should call Celsion at 800.262.0394 and ask for Celsion's Medical Director, Dr. William Gannon.
