Since its inception in 1993, CaP CURE has been a leader in raising awareness regarding prostate cancer and has led the efforts to search for a cure. Largely though CaP CURE's efforts U.S. government support for prostate cancer research has increased from $60 million to $430 million annually. In addition, CaP CURE has awarded more than $104 million to fund 1,000 medical research projects worldwide.

Dr. Trump, a national cancer leader in innovative clinical trials in prostate cancer and Senior Vice President for Clinical Research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute The Roswell Park Cancer Institute is a cancer research and treatment center located in Buffalo, New York. Founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park, it was the first dedicated medical facility for cancer treatment and research in the United States.  in Buffalo, New York, will report on the anticipated start of human clinical trials of Celsion's investigational therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

The Company will undertake Phase I clinical trials at Roswell Park, one of the leading cancer centers in the United States.

Celsion's investigational drug delivery technology is based upon the work of David Needham, Ph.D. and Mark Dewhirst, DVM DVM Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

According to Dr. Needham, Professor of Material Sciences, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at Duke University and the inventor of the temperature-sensitive liposome utilized by the Celsion system, the technology employs specially designed liposomes Liposomes

, which open when heated.

When the anticancer drug encapsulated in these liposomes is injected into the bloodstream of a cancer patient and the cancer treatment site is subjected to mild heat, the liposomes open and rapidly release their "load" of chemotherapeutic drugs directly at the treatment site.

This release is significantly more rapid than in conventional liposomal therapy. As reported in Cancer Research - Advances in Brief (March 1, 2000), this increased concentration of drug in the treatment area caused long-term complete regression of tumors in all of the mice treated in the initial small animal studies of the Celsion treatment system.

Celsion holds an exclusive license from Duke University for the use of Duke's patented temperature-sensitive liposome technology.

Dr. Augustine Cheung, Celsion's founder and Chief Executive Officer commented, "We are very excited to move forward into this new field of cancer treatment. Demonstrating that the combination of our focused-heat therapy and temperature-sensitive liposomes can be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer will be a first step. If we are successful, this combination could serve as a platform for other types of cancer treatments, including the use of our temperature-sensitive liposome technology to encapsulate a range of cancer-fighting drugs.
