Cellular handset manufacturers now can leapfrog to the next generation of phones with ANADIGICS new low cost GaAS power amplifier.

WARREN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1997--The new ANADIGICS low cost GaAs power amplifier, the AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit) A class library from Sun that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. AWT was the first user interface development system included in the Java Foundation Classes (JFC). 1903, is intended for use with PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.  1900 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  applications.

The AWT1903 power amplifier serves as a core active device building block for 1850 to 1910 MHz CDMA cellular phone transmitter functions. The power amplifier is designed and optimized to accommodate the linearity requirements of the CDMA signal spectrum by significantly minimizing spectral regrowth Re`growth´

n. 1. The act of regrowing; a second or new growth.

The AWT1903 is an off-the-shelf solution that will significantly reduce development time and space requirements. The power amplifier is composed of a 5V three stage class AB GaAs MESFET See FET.  amplifier requiring an external -3.6V supply to establish the gate bias voltages. Featuring an integrated bias control circuit, the AWT1903 enables the user to easily implement temperature compensation or reduce the power dissipation during idle periods and low power transmit levels.

The IC typically exhibits 26 dB gain, -12 dB input return loss, 33% efficiency and an ACPR ACPR Adjacent Channel Power Ratio

@1.25 MHz offset of 33 dBc at an output power of 28 dBm in the 1850 to 1910 MHz PCS band. The AWT1903 is well suited to handle the linearity requirements of CDMA signals at 28 dBm with high gain and efficiency.

The output matching circuit and main bias control element are completely external to the package, enabling the user to make any performance tradeoffs particular to the system.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), operating within the PCS frequency range, is an access method applied in digital cellular systems. The CDMA signal must be transmitted in a linear fashion to maintain phase-shift keying modulation and to prevent spectral regrowth into adjacent channels. Also, adjacent channel power rejection requires linear power amplifier operation at lower power levels while maintaining high DC to RF conversion efficiency to maximize battery life.

In addition to reduced space requirements, this GaAs MMIC (Monolithic Microwave IC) An integrated circuit used in high-frequency applications such as mobile phones. Also known as "monolithic microwave/millimeter-wave IC," MMICs combine transistors and passive devices (resistors, capacitors, etc.  solution provides an economic alternative to discrete and hybrid amplifiers.  package. It is manufactured using ANADIGICS' high volume GaAs MESFET technology, resulting in a low cost and space efficient solution compared to hybrid models and discrete designs. The AWT1903 is manufactured in the company's state-of-the-art ISO (1) See ISO speed.

(2) (International Organization for Standardization, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iso.ch) An organization that sets international standards, founded in 1946. The U.S. member body is ANSI.
9001 certified facility in New Jersey, and is 100% tested at DC and RF before shipping to maximize reliability.

The AWT1903 is available at $8 in quantities of 100,000.
