Cellular") to implement a "Beta" field test of CTS's pre-call fraud prevention software application known by its code-name "Blackbird blackbird, common name in North America of a perching bird allied to the bobolink, the meadow lark, the oriole, and the grackle and belonging to the family Icteridae. The European blackbird, Turdus merula, is a thrush. ." The Beta test A test of new or revised hardware or software that is performed by users at their facilities under normal operating conditions. Beta testing follows alpha testing. Vendors of packaged software often offer their customers the opportunity of beta testing new releases or versions, and the  will involve installation of the Blackbird system in certain L.A. Cellular cell sites in two phases.

Blackbird is a pro-active, pre-call solution to the fast growing problem of cellular fraud through "cloning" in which cellular phones are illegally modified to duplicate a legitimate cellular customer's phone. Blackbird uses patented signal processing See DSP.  or "fingerprinting" technology to accurately distinguish between legitimate customers and counterfeit To falsify, deceive, or defraud. A copy or imitation of something that is intended to be taken as authentic and genuine in order to deceive another.

A counterfeit coin is one that may pass for a genuine coin and may include a lower denomination coin altered so that it may

The CTS pre-call system captures a cellular phone's unique frequency pattern at the cell site, before it enters the service provider's system, and can automatically interdict interdict (ĭn`tərdĭkt), ecclesiastical censure notably used in the Roman Catholic Church, especially in the Middle Ages. When a parish, state, or nation is placed under the interdict no public church ceremony may take place, only certain  and shut down the call if a proper match is not made.

Gene Welsh, chief financial officer, L.A. Cellular, said:"The purpose of the Beta test is to further evaluate the CTS product features and benefits in a live environment. Since the very beginning, we have worked closely with CTS on the design and testing of Blackbird on the L.A. Cellular system. We are anxious for the results once the Beta test is completed. Our goal, as always, is to provide the very best service and protection for our customers."

Bob Dahut, CTS President, said:"We were very pleased with the early test results for Blackbird and are looking forward to working with L.A. Cellular in the Beta test environment. Our evaluation of the software platform thus far indicates that the system's ability to capture valuable pre-call data can provide an effective, pro-active solution to the problem of cloning."

Dahut added:"Blackbird's pre-call-platform approach offers wireless communications wireless communications

providers a timely and cost-effective solution to the fast growing problem of cellular fraud. In addition, Blackbird's pre-call platform can, in the future, provide a broad range of service-enhancing software applications. Based on the results of our tests to date and the forthcoming Beta test results, we plan to aggressively market Blackbird to wireless service providers both domestically and internationally during the first half of 1995."
