Cellular One first cellular provider to launch Digital PCS in Boston.


BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1996--

Advanced technology allows single wireless phone to serve as an answering machine and pager with Caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. Cellular One Digital PCS phones automatically sense and select the digital cellular network whenever possible, but also operate on the existing analog cellular systems nationwide.

Cellular One Digital PCS offers the following services: -0- o Caller ID. This service allows customers to see who is calling before answering the call, so customers can screen calls and decide which ones to answer.

o Longer Battery Life. Digital phones "sleep" between calls, conserving energy and more than doubling standby time. This reduces a customer's chance of missing important calls, as well as the need to carry and recharge spare batteries.

o Intelligent Voice Mail with Visual Message Waiting Indicator Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) in telephony, is a Bellcore term for an FSK-based telephone calling feature that illuminates an LED on select telephones to notify a telephone user of waiting voicemail messages on most North American public telephone networks and PBXs. . With a quick glance, customers can see how many messages they have waiting, and review them with the touch of one button.

o Built-in Alphanumeric Pager. Customers callers can page them with call-back numbers or leave up to 80-character text messages. Even if a customer's phone is turned off, their messages will be stored for three days. The Alphanumeric Paging feature will be available in the spring.

o Privacy. Because calls are digitized, customers conversations are more private.

o Security. Transparent to customers, built-in features throughout the Cellular One network, together with authentication features in the new digital phones, will help protect against phone number cloning. Legitimate phones are asked to identify themselves via a non-duplicable number encoded in their software. -0-

Cellular One PCS is available with Cellular One's current rate plans. Caller ID will cost $3.95 per month, but will be introduced free for a year to customers who sign up by Dec. 31, 1996. Alphanumeric paging will cost $9.95 per month for up to 100 messages.
