Cellular One and Motorola Donate 500 Wireless Phones and Airtime to Arizona Domestic Violence Prevention Efforts.

 Joins in Launching Campaign in Phoenix

In partnership with Call To Protect, a nationwide campaign to help protect survivors of domestic abuse, Cellular One and Motorola are committing 500 wireless phones and free local airtime to domestic violence prevention organizations in Arizona.

U.S. Senator John McCain joins with the wireless phone industry in the Call To Protect: Wireless Phones for Domestic Safety campaign event in Phoenix today.

"The ways in which Americans are affected by domestic violence is staggering," said Senator McCain. "The wireless industry's Call To Protect initiative is a perfect example of how the business community, teaming with private individuals and state officials, can make a difference in fighting a horrible social problem like domestic violence."

 Foundation shows that 72 percent of the public believe wireless phones will provide more safety to victims of domestic violence in those crucial first days of separating from the abusive partner.

Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, who praised the Call To Protect campaign, underscored this statistic. "Call To Protect is a significant aid to individuals in abusive situations and is making an important contribution to educating the public about signs of domestic violence."

As part of the program, Cellular One and Motorola are providing:

-- Wireless telephones and free local airtime to victims of domestic

violence. The phones are preprogrammed so victims can reach 911

and other emergency services with the push of a button when they

feel threatened.

-- Wireless phones and free local airtime to family violence

professionals, victim assistance volunteers and family violence

case workers to help them contact victims and report abuse.

-- Information on how to recognize the five key signs of domestic

violence and what you can do about it.

Cellular One and Motorola have already donated and delivered 35 cellular telephones to the Chandler Police Department Victim Assistance Program and Parents Anonymous of Arizona. Additional phones are available to eligible family violence prevention groups in Arizona.

"Our victim assistance volunteers use the phones when they are out in the community working with victims of domestic violence," said Sally Henry, coordinator of the Victim Assistance Program at the Chandler Police Department. "They might use the phone to call emergency services or to find shelter for a victim after a violent incident."
