Cellular Carriers Applaud FCC's Efforts to Enhance Effectiveness of Cellular 9-1-1.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 1996--The Cellular Carriers Association of California today announced its support of the Federal Communications Commission's decision to adopt a plan jointly proposed by the cellular phone industry and public safety agencies to provide technology that will enhance Cellular 9-1-1.

"The new technology called Enhanced 9-1-1 will help improve the delivery of emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  in California," said Steve Carlson Steve Carlson can refer to:

A difficult challenge in cellular communications, unlike wireline, is location identification. For most wireline customers, when a caller dials 9-1-1 the emergency dispatchers can immediately identify the callers' exact location. That's because wireline phones don't move. But in the cellular industry, the technology is just emerging that will enable emergency dispatchers to identify a caller's location.
