REDWOOD CITY Redwood City, city (1990 pop. 66,072), seat of San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1868. Manufactures include commmunications, electrical, electronic, and medical equipment. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 2004

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:CHKP CHKP Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (stock abbreviation, AMEX) ), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that Cellcom, the largest cellular operator in Israel, has successfully implemented Check Point FireWall-1(R) GX(TM) to provide its more than 2.5 million business and consumer customers with the highest level of security and up-time in its cellular networks. Check Point also today announced that the company is achieving further traction in the cellular security market (see related release).

Internet attacks have become increasingly prominent within wireless networks, and Cellcom realized they needed a comprehensive security solution to protect against both IP and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations.  attacks. They chose to implement Check Point FireWall-1 GX because it combats both malicious and fraudulent attacks, and is able to intelligently detect when connections are opened and terminated. This significantly reduces the probability of over-billing attacks, which take advantage of open connections to flood the network with unwanted traffic. Additionally, Cellcom is now secured from other common security attacks such as DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the  or IP spoofing Inserting the IP address of an authorized user into the transmission of an unauthorized user in order to gain illegal access to a computer system. Routers and other firewall implementations can be programmed to identify this discrepancy. See firewall.  that can lead to restricted service and fraudulent use of the network.

"What we needed was the most comprehensive security solution that covered our GPRS and IP needs under one common architecture," said Tzvi Shechori, Vice President, Research and Technology at Cellcom. "We have enjoyed a close collaboration with Check Point to ensure that our security solution is world-class, future-proofed and provides us with the lowest total cost of ownership."

"Cellcom's wide spectrum of services presented security challenges that were resolved with Check Point's leading FireWall-1 GX technology, and we are delighted that their customers can benefit from maximum up-time," said David Aminzade, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) Refers to that region of the world. "Cellcom is the first cellular operator serving the Israeli market to implement a comprehensive security architecture capable of countering IP-based attacks on both its GPRS or UMTS networks Beginning in 2003 under the name 3, Hutchison Whampoa, a large port operator, has gradually launched their startup UMTS networks worldwide including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland and Sweden. ."
