DAVID Blunkett David Blunkett (born 6 June 1947) is a British Labour Party politician and has been Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside since 1987. Blind since birth and from a poor family, he rose to become Education Secretary from 1997 to 2001, and then Home Secretary from 2001 to  was yesterday ordered to hold an independent inquiry into the prison cell murder of young Asian man locked up with a white racist.

 ruled the Home Secretary should hold a public probe into the killing of 19-year-old Zahid Mubarek, battered by Robert Stewart, 19.

Zahid's uncle Imtiaz Amin said last night: "We are overjoyed."

Mr Blunkett had refused to sanction a probe into why Mubarek was put in the same cell.

Zahid died on the day he was due to be released from Feltham Young Offenders Institute after serving a 90-day sentence for theft from a car.
