During the interview, Dr. Lohrding discussed the Company's two main product lines: the Lasette and the Cell Robotics Workstation. Regarding the Lasette, Mr. Lohrding emphasized the need for US companies to address the new "Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act" targeted at hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and correctional facilities. Specifically, correctional facilities have a strong motivation for using the Company's completely needleless system for drawing capillary blood. As well, in the enormous home-use diabetes market the company is focusing on working with medical professionals such as diabetic educators and diabetes organizations such as the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Blood glucose levels are a measure of an individual's health status. Because people with diabetes cannot properly produce or metabolize glucose, today they typically monitor their glucose levels by frequently pricking their fingertips to draw the drop of blood necessary for conventional glucose monitoring. The FDA-cleared Lasette is a needleless laser finger perforator that allows the nearly painless drawing of capillary blood samples. The yearly worldwide market for glucose testing is estimated at $3.7 billion and is growing at an annual rate of 12 to 18 percent.

Dr. Lohrding also discussed the increased interest in the Cell Robotics Workstation. Growing sales can be attributed in part to the following enabling areas within biotechnology. The enormous human genome project defined the individual through the genetic structure. Using the genome as a blueprint, the study of proteins helps explain what can cause or cure diseases. The study of proteins, called proteomics, is a new emphasis area for biology. The Cell Robotics Workstation, through its LaserTweezers(R) and LaserScissors(R), allows new ways to study the function and structure of proteins. Understanding proteins is a key to curing such neurological diseases as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Another area where the workstation provides increased efficiency is in the production of transgenic animals. These are animals that have human genes inserted into them. For example, transgenic chickens will produce a particular protein in the whites of their eggs. This protein can then be harvested from the egg as a constituent of a drug to treat disease. Once such a transgenic chicken is developed then the Cell Robotics Workstation can be used to create a genetic copy of additional chickens for the drug production. Finally, efficiency can also be improved in the laboratory. Scientists can supervise technicians using the Cell Robotics Workstation rather than being required to use their personal expertise to perform detailed operations. For example, technicians can isolate stem cells from such tissues as fat obtained by liposuction for the growing of skin, bone or cartilage.

Other product being considered for development are a Lasette that contains a glucose meter and an instrument for performing laser myringotomy, which is considered by many to be a safer alternative to placing tubes in the eardrum.
