Cell Phones Save Lives.

Give your old cell phone a second life--and perhaps even save human lives--by donating it to a national campaign to prevent domestic violence. Actress Susan Sarandon is featured in the national television and radio public service campaign launched on behalf of the Donate a Phone program, which seeks to collect 1 million used wireless phones from the public. Wireless-industry experts estimate that there are as many as 24 million inactive wireless phones in people's homes and businesses.

The phone campaign is a partnership effort of Motorola, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Wireless Foundation (established by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association), both of Washington, D.C. The new campaign is part of Call to Protect, a national program that provides domestic violence victims with phones preprogrammed with emergency numbers. Since this domestic violence prevention project began in 1996, Motorola has donated 16,000 wireless phones, and 74 wireless carriers who are CTIA members have donated free airtime.
