Cell Computing and Advanced Visual Systems Inc. Launch High-Performance Data Visualization Applications on Credit-Card-Sized PCs.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 1999--

See Advanced Visual Systems Inc. with Cell Computing Cell Computing is a distributed computing project operated by NTT Data to perform biomedical research.

It currently uses the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) platform, however it was initially launched using the United Devices Grid MP platform in

Advanced Visual Systems Inc. (AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside ) and Cell Computing, Inc. (Cell) today announced the availability of AVS' leading-edge data visualization technology on the Cell Computing CardPC - the industry's smallest Pentium PC. AVS software is supported on CardPC-based systems running the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.

AVS/Express is AVS' premier solution to data visualization, which traditionally has required high-performance workstations, but is now available as an embedded application. When installed on micro-motherboard-based products like the Cell Computing CardPC -- data visualization can be implemented in test and measurement equipment, military display systems, medical devices, network monitors, or any other systems that collect and display visual data to support decision-making and analysis. The combination of data visualization and CardPCs brings quick data driven decisions to the location where the decisions need to be made, whether it is on the road or in the field, rather than limited to where workstations traditionally are.

Henri Uehara, Cell Computing President, said, "By teaming with AVS we are able to offer our customers the ability to perform complex rendering and mapping applications with very large data sets -- in real time, and at the source of the data. No longer is it necessary for applications like medical imaging or ground-penetrating radar to upload data from instrumentation to a workstation-type host -- the information can be displayed at the point of collection for immediate action."

"By having AVS/Express running on CardPC, our customers have yet another platform on which our products are supported," said Russ Barbour, President and Chief Executive officer of AVS. "By no longer requiring information to be uploaded, this joint effort by Cell Computing and AVS allows customers to make better decisions, more quickly, giving them a unique competitive advantage."

AVS product overview

AVS is the premier global provider of visualization technology with users in the technical, scientific, and commercial data mining markets, including geospatial, defense, telecommunications, medical imaging, engineering, oil and gas, aerospace, government research, embedded systems, and financial services. AVS products and services deliver insight and competitive advantage to these customers and run on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, all major UNIX UNIX

About Cell Computing

Cell Computing, Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets the CardPC and other micro-motherboard OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  products for the embedded computing market. Cell Computing is owned by PFU PFU
