The Millennium Vision

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. How Your Voice Could Help Our Cause.

Glenn HENING

FOUNDER, SURFRIDER FOUNDATION

Waves and beaches give us gifts of special joy. Playing tag with or riding the waves, observing marine life for the first or hundredth time, warm sand or t feeling the peace of warm sand or the spirit of a blue horizon, our shorelines are magical places indeed.

But as our thoughts turn to recreation in the next millennium, we must ensure that waves and beaches remain timeless treasures for both present and future generations. Our childlike sense of wonder must now be combined with a mature dedication to stewardship.

The special environment where land meets sea deserves our best efforts to safeguard and enhance its recreational benefits. Although this will always be a difficult challenge, the inspiration of waves and beaches can help us meet the needs of both our shorelines and our society.

As director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I talk a lot about how moderate physical activity for 30 minutes most days of the week can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.

Because I truly enjoy and believe in the benefits of physical activity, I make time for it. Some days of the week I walk; other days I row, cycle, or swim. Fortunately, this works for me because I live near Atlanta's Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area: see National Parks and Monuments (table). .

I look forward to the day when physical activity is convenient and safe for everyone, and America's parks and recreation areas can play a major role.

When physical activity fits naturally into everyday life more people will want to be physically active. And a physically active America is a healthy America.

Without the park and recreation programs in Long Beach, I would never have been a tennis player.

I took group lessons from Clyde Walker, who would spend one day a week at each of the five area parks. I followed him and went every day to one of those parks, including Rec Park, which is now the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

I got my first tennis lesson at Houghton Park. That was the day I decided that I wanted to be the No. 1 player in the world. With those free group lessons, I was able to afford my dream. I'm such a big believer in local park and recreation programs for kids. And I wasn't the only pro tennis player to benefit from these programs, Zina Garrison Zina Lynna Garrison (born November 16, 1963 in Houston, Texas) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Maybe tennis's next big star is out there in a park and rec program right now. It's important that these programs for everyone.

I am an ardent supporter of public parks and recreation. As we approach the new century, I believe it is imperative that our country sustain and augment recreation programs for all of our citizens, particularly our young people.

, I have seen firsthand that tennis, for example, helps teach our youth the value of sportsmanship, the excitement of competition, the meaning of teamwork, and the outcome of hard work and perseverance on the road to excellence. With so many negative influences for kids these days, it is especially important that we foster such positive, healthy, and constructive outlets for our youth -- opportunities for young people of different backgrounds to come together.

On the public courts where I often play, tennis brings you in touch with so many people of different backgrounds and cultures.

On the courts, it doesn't matter whence you came -- all that matters is your serve and your skill. Competition is based not on economics or heritage or color, but on common ground.

Had I not lived near one of the last remaining skateparks of the 1980s, my life would have been very different.

I was fortunate to have a place to hone my skills, as skateboarding in undesignated areas is generally unwelcome. Most kids of my generation were not so lucky, and skateboarding's popularity fizzled.

sport of skateboarding is riding a new wave of acceptance. Many new skateparks -- public and private -- are being built in cities nationwide. Skaters now have places to practice that I never imagined were possible.

Whenever I go with my 6-year-old son, Riley, to the city-built public skatepark near our home, I realize that his is a generation of incredible opportunity.

Brains are terrific. Muscles are sensational (and oh so good looking). A positive attitude can make life worth living. But to bring it all together you've got to have heart! And one of the best ways to strengthen your heart is through regular physical activity.

Work those muscles and you'll keep your weight down, lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol level increase your stamina, and look and feel like a million dollars. That's why we at the National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute have teamed up with the National Recreation and Park Association. Let's get America moving!

The purpose of Millennium Trails is to spark the creation and enhancement of more than 2,000 trails as part of America's legacy for the future.

This will include hiking and scenic trails, bike paths, greenways and scenic byways, heritage trails and itineraries which tell the story of our nation. In the course of the next year, we will designate over 2,000 National Millennium Trails, Millennium Legacy Trails, and Community Trails.

Imagine a network of Millennium Trails connecting every community in America, carving a path through urban and rural areas, carrying us along our landscape, making it possible for people to walk or bike to work and school, helping us understand and celebrate our history and culture. Millennium Trails will be very tangible gifts to the future. They will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Together they represent a commitment and an investment in the kind of country we want to create in the next century.

I played organized baseball between the ages of 7 and 13. When I was 11, my parents made me take tennis lessons, and I fell in love with the sport. My entire teenage life was encompassed by my passion for playing tennis. I made new friends, learned how to compete, made decisions about my own personal health, and learned to manage my time so I could work during the days of summer vacation Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students are off for 3 months, depending on the country and district. , practice my tennis game in the evenings, and compete in tournaments on the weekends.

My involvement in sports at public parks and recreation facilities has definitely prepared me for my life in corporate America. I have realized that the metaphor among competitive sport, health, and performance in business is incredible. I truly thank all park employees and volunteers for the role they play in the life of every American.
