Celebration takes playful approach.

Byline: The Register-Guard

AT LAST YEAR'S Fiesta Latina celebration, one segment of the community was particularly well represented.

"There were so many kids last year. It was like a kid explosion," said Rebeca Urhausen, festival chairwoman. "We knew we had to do something extra for the children this year."

Now in its 11th year, Fiesta Latina draws an estimated 15,000 people to the Washington-Jefferson Park for music, dance, art, family entertainment and, of course, food. The event, sponsored by the Adelante Si Hispanic Organization, is today, Saturday and Sunday.

Some of the new attractions for the ninos this year include hands-on workshops and a passport area that allows kids to take a tour of Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  and get their travel papers stamped.

One of the highlights for both kids and adults this year will be an appearance by the Titiri-Tatara puppeteers from Guanajuato, Mexico. Assuming the group is able to iron out all of its visa complications, the troupe will present a play called "The Bakery" at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Other children's attractions include a petting zoo, clowns, musicians and 150 pinatas, to be divided between Saturday and Sunday.
