WHAT: On Saturday, January 14, Mayor Richard M. Daley, civil rights
attorney Thomas Todd, Target regional director Mary-Farrell
Tarbox, and other civic and corporate leaders will join more
than 2,000 volunteers for the annual Chicago Cares Celebration
of Service. This one-of-a-kind event honors the life and legacy
of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteers will gather to hear
inspirational messages, participate in more than 40 service
projects across the city, or take part in workshops promoting
equality and respect.
Chicago Cares is one of the city's premier volunteer
organizations. The organization mobilizes thousands of
volunteers every year who give back to the community at more
than 100 projects every month. Volunteer projects including
serving children, adults, seniors, the environment, the hungry
and the homeless.
WHEN: Saturday, January 14
-- Volunteer check-in 8:00 a.m. Morning Ceremony 8:45 a.m. -

WHO: Thousands of volunteers, including over 1,200 from Target, 500
students from the Chicago Public Schools, and many major
Chicago corporations will join together to live out Dr. King's
vision of peace, equality and freedom. Volunteers will be
rallied in the morning by inspirational speeches from Mayor
Daley and Thomas Todd, a nationally recognized civil rights
activist who once worked alongside Dr. King.

Each year, on the Saturday before Dr. Martin Luther King Day,
Chicago Cares unites thousands of volunteers for a rewarding day of
hands-on community service. The event brings corporate teams,
community groups, Chicago Public High School students and individuals
together to spend the day working with seniors, children, and each
other on service activities in honor of Dr. King. Participation in the
event inspires individuals and youth to become involved in the
community by educating them on the power of volunteerism.
2006 CHICAGO CARES CELEBRATION OF SERVICE OVERVIEW:
-- Inspirational morning ceremony includes remarks from Mayor
Richard M. Daley and civil rights attorney Thomas Todd,
along with music from the Crispus Attucks Heritage Ensemble
and the Kelvyn Park High School Drum & Bugle Corps
-- 2,000 volunteers, including 1200 from Target and 500
Chicago Public High School students
-- 45 project sites across the city; 8,000 hours of service
will be completed
-- More than $145,000 raised to support Chicago Cares
2006 CHICAGO CARES CELEBRATION OF SERVICE PROJECT SITES & WORKSHOPS:
Chicago Cares will provide interested media with site maps to
select project sites where they can interview volunteers and videotape
them working, including:
-- Piccolo Specialty School 50 volunteers will paint a
1040 N. Keeler, Chicago large inspirational mural in
the hallway and complete
enhancement and organizational
work in the school's libraries.
-- Coonley Elementary 45 volunteers will paint
4046 N. Leavitt, Chicago school subject murals in
multiple areas throughout
building, while others paint a
hallway or complete enhancement
and organizational work in
multiple libraries.
-- Lane Tech High School 200 participants in "A
2501 W. Addison, Chicago Community of Difference"
workshops, facilitated by the
Anti-Defamation League, that
examine stereotypes, cultures,
discrimination, diversity and
integration. Participants will
discuss and challenge bias and
brainstorm how each individual
can take action to promote
equality and respect.
