Celebrating math. (Curriculum update: the latest developments in math, science, language arts and social studies).

If you've been keeping tabs on nationwide, math-related events, you know that April, both Math Awareness Month and Math Education Month, has garnered most of the attention. To help reinforce the concept of math literacy at the beginning of the school year and to put a greater emphasis on K-3 math education, Watertown, Mass.-based Digi-Block is launching Math Literacy Week.

To be celebrated Oct. 7-11 this year, the event features a bus tour and a Web site, which includes free lesson plans for each day of the week, as well as activities and handouts. "There can never be too many events about math literacy," says Bill Rosenthal, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Having a good, strong foundation in math is critical [in daily life].... It's our goal not to take away from reading but to make sure math gets equal footing."

When schools plan events such as Math Party Day, a game-filled family day that is suggested as the culmination of Math Literacy Week, Rosenthal says children get excited about math. "Once you've got the excitement, they'll take care of the learning on their own."
