History in Art The challenge for any storyteller is to tell a story in such a way that an audience stays interested. Lawrence met this challenge by working with brightly colored paint to create pleasing shapes and patterns for the characters and settings in his paintings. If a story had too many parts to tell in one image, Lawrence created a series of several paintings. The artworks on these pages show you two examples from a series he created. Before he began a series, Lawrence first had to decide how to attract his audience's attention. Then he decided what to show as the story continued, and how to bring it to an interesting end. The artist's paintings seem like little stages where action takes place, just like in a theater. Sharing Stories People have been sharing stories with their friends and family for thousands of years. Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) Plotting Pictures When Jacob Lawrence decided to paint a series, he created the story's plot in pictures, sketching each scene with a pencil on sketch paper. After copying the sketches onto paper or board, Lawrence chose all the colors. He used one color at a time to paint the images. He painted the first color on all the boards. Then he added the second color, then the third, and so on, until he finished the images. By using many of the same colors in all the boards, he created a series of images that look as though they belong together. Lawrence used this system of working whenever he made a series of pictures.
