Celanese Signs Major Supply Agreements for Nanjing Site; Agreements Represent Key Milestones for New Acetic Acid Plant.

KRONBERG, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 2004

Celanese AG today announced major supplier agreements for its planned 600,000 metric ton acetic acid acetic acid (əsē`tĭk), CH3CO2H, colorless liquid that has a characteristic pungent odor, boils at 118°C;, and is miscible with water in all proportions; it is a weak organic carboxylic acid (see carboxyl group).  plant in the Nanjing Chemical Industry Park, Nanjing City, in eastern China (Jiangsu Province). The agreements represent key milestone's in the company's Nanjing facility project.

The company signed a 15-year agreement with The BOC (Bell Operating Company) One of 22 companies that was formerly part of AT&T and later organized into seven regional companies. See RBOC.  Group for the supply of carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; . BOC is the largest industrial gases company in China and throughout Asia. It will construct plants, pipelines and other infrastructure for the supply of oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and steam to Celanese and other companies in Nanjing Chemical Industry Park. Completion of the BOC project is scheduled for mid-2006.

Also, Celanese announced that it has agreed to purchase the acetic acid reactor for the plant from AstroCosmos of Camarillo, California. The design reflects the combined technical expertise of Celanese and AstroCosmos, one of the world's largest producers of corrosive-resistant, reactive metals equipment for the chemical processing industries.

As previously announced, Celanese plans to begin operations at its Nanjing plant in 2006.

Recently, Nanjing Dragon Crown Terminal Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Dragon Crown, announced that it will provide terminal services and logistical support for the Celanese Nanjing plant from a new public terminal along the Yangtze River.

As announced last October, Celanese is also actively working with Maison Engineering and Constructors (MEC MEC Ministério da Educação (Ministry of Education)

MEC Mountain Equipment Co-Op
), China Huanqiu Contracting and Engineering Corporation (HQ) and Foster-Wheeler Eastern Pte., Ltd., Singapore, on engineering, design, procurement and construction management services activities for the Nanjing plant.

Acetic acid is made from a reaction of methanol and carbon monoxide. Methanol is available from multiple global and local sources and is also produced by Celanese. With its state-of-the art process technology, Celanese holds a worldwide leading position in acetic acid with production capacities of more than 2 million metric tons per-annum.
