Speaking today at the organization's Seventh Annual North American Trucking Conference held in Washington, D.C., Russell said that Celadon began service to Mexico in 1985.

Russell, who is also the newly-elected Chairman of the International Trade and Customs Committee of the American Trucking Association, said that in spite of facing a host of problems not endured by domestic carriers, including devaluations, Celadon has been successful with its Mexican business, and has witnessed a 30 percent annual growth rate in trade between the countries. Celadon is currently the number one carrier in the Mexican/U.S. truckload business.

He added, "Mexico has ninety million people and it is only three days by truck from Mexico City to Chicago, versus four weeks by ship from Taipei. Furthermore," he said, "companies such as Fisher Price are shifting production from Hong Kong to Monterey; Lucent from Singapore to Guadalajara; Volkswagen from Germany to Puebla, Mercedes-Benz to Toluca." He also cited the expanded production facilities in Mexico of the big three automobile companies. He told the group, "The hourly compensation for a production worker is $17.74 in the U.S.; $16.66 in Canada; Japan, $21.04; Korea, $8.23; Singapore, $8.32; Hong Kong, $5.14; Taiwan, $5.86; France, $19.34; Italy; $18.08; Spain, $13.29 and Mexico, $1.50."

Russell said that NAFTA NAFTA

If you placed all of our tractors and trailers end-to-end," Russell said, "they would stretch for 60 miles. In Mexico, a penny per mile lower rate will not shift a customer away to another carrier. Service and reliability are critical. We trust our clients in Mexico and they trust us. We are the most committed to the trade, and we believe we are the best at it," he concluded.

Celadon Group, Inc. is a truckload company specializing in the transport of goods to and from Mexico. The company has approximately 1,800 operating line haul tractors including 450 owner-operated units, and 5,100 trailers. -0-
