NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, is providing its NMS HearSay(TM) voice services system to Cegetel's SFR subsidiary to give thousands of mobile phone subscribers in France real-time, detailed Tour de France updates through cell broadcast messages. SFR will roll out other location-based services such as local sports, weather, festivals, and news during the three-month trial. The complete and open NMS HearSay solution for SFR includes text-to-speech technology, integration support and messaging connectivity from application developer Swapcom, and server technology from Oracle.

The NMS HearSay system enables SFR to provide voice content for cell broadcast messages for the Tour de France race in July. Subscribers can receive brief cell broadcast text updates with a phone number to call to hear more detailed event information. For SFR, this means increased revenue per subscriber.

Cell broadcast is a mobile capability available within a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network that allows messages to be simultaneously broadcasted to mobile phones and other devices within a designated geographical area. Cell broadcast messages can only convey a limited amount of information, but a voice-access service such as that made possible by NMS HearSay enables the subscriber to obtain more detailed information.

NMS HearSay is a completely open, ready-to-deploy system that enables operators to rapidly and cost-effectively offer their subscribers custom multimodal voice and data communications services such as short message service, location-based services, and unified communications. By integrating applications and technology from leaders such as Oracle, NMS HearSay spares operators the significant burden of identifying and then ensuring that these hardware and software products are ready for deployment in "live" network environments. And unlike most platforms that offer only a single application, NMS HearSay supports multiple applications from multiple vendors. As a result, operators can innovate, providing the latest revenue-generating voice and data services, faster and at a lower cost.

NMS HearSay is based on an open architecture that merges telecom mobility with the content-rich Internet and allows for an easy evolution from circuit-switched to packet-based Internet Protocol networks as well as the transition from 2G to next-generation 2.5G and 3G architectures. For the SFR solution, NMS HearSay leverages the expertise and capabilities from Oracle and Swapcom:

-- Oracle -- NMS HearSay fully integrates the Oracle9i(TM) Application Server and software within the system. The wireless capabilities in the Oracle9i Application Server allows content to be delivered to any device. In SFR's Cell Broadcast trial this feature is used to deliver the information feed to the NMS Hearsay platform for text-to-speech rendering.

-- Swapcom - Swapcom is a leading independent mobile software company. Swapcom software connects SFR's network infrastructure such as SMSCs and CBCs with the service trial platform. Swapcom also provides the cell broadcast content management module that allows SFR to centrally manage Content Providers and to measure subscriber usage and feedback.

NMS HearSay allowed SFR to quickly bring added value to its subscribers by giving them instant access to the excitement of the Tour de France. The service provider needed to efficiently roll out cell broadcast services with voice information updates to coincide with this international sporting event. At the same time, they wanted to build a solid foundation for service delivery in the future.

As a subsidiary of Cegetel, the second largest telecommunications provider in France, SFR provides wireless phone services to more than 12 million customers throughout the country. Network coverage extends to 98 percent of the population, 94 percent of the road network, and 82 percent of France.
