Cedar Falls Health and Human Service Organizations Awarded Sizeable Grants; Four Local Agencies Benefit from Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. During First Quarter.


CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Cedar Falls is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States, and it is home to one of Iowa's three public universities, the University of Northern Iowa. The population was 36,145 at the 2000 census.  -- In an effort to support Cedar Falls Cedar Falls, city (1990 pop. 34,298), Black Hawk co., N Iowa, on the Cedar River; inc. 1854. It developed as a milling center in the late 19th-century after the coming of the railroad; its name is derived from the cedar tree.  in providing the basics all people need for a healthy life, the Principal Financial Group(R) and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. provided grants totaling $20,000 during first quarter 2005 to four Cedar Falls health and human service organizations.

"Through the Foundation, we are able to target our contributions toward entities that have the greatest impact on the communities in which our employees live and work," noted Libby Jacobs Libby Swanson Jacobs is the Iowa State Representative from the 60th District. She has served in the Iowa House of Representatives since 1994. She received her BA from the University of Nebraska and her MPA from Drake University. , community relations director of the Principal Financial Group. "The fact that we were able to award so many grants to worthy organizations from across the United States demonstrates the great need we have in our local communities for funding health and human service projects. The Principal is pleased to be able to contribute."

Organizations benefiting from the Foundation include:

--Adults Incorporated - Funded completely by foundation, corporate and individual donations, Adults Incorporated assists family caregivers by providing daytime care for elderly or disabled family members.

--Cedar Valley Hospice/Palliative Care Program - This home care program provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to terminally ill Terminally Ill

When a person is not expected to live more than 12 months.

--El Centro Latinoamericano - The only resource for a growing Latino population in the Cedar Valley, El Centro Latinoamericano's mission is to increase the Latino community's presence. Through the grant provided by the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., the organization will continue to provide assistance for Latinos needing such services as energy, housing or medical assistance, shelter and food or employment.

--Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife.  - The grant provided by the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. will support the organization's goal of eliminating poverty housing by working with families and volunteers to build simple, respectable and affordable housing and sell to the family with a no-interest mortgage.

The Principal(R) and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. also awarded a total of $758,500 in health and human service grants in other communities with a large employee presence, including Des Moines, Mason City and Ottumwa, Iowa; Appleton, Wis.; Grand Island, Neb.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Middletown, Conn.; Phoenix/Tucson, Ariz.; Spokane, Wash.; and Wilmington, Del.
