Cdr. Ron Carlson was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross for his extraordinary achievements while flying an S-3 Viking on a refueling mission with VS-32 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.


Cdr. Ron Carlson Ron Carlson is an American novelist and writer of short stories.

Carlson was born in Logan, Utah, but grew up in Salt Lake City. He earned a masters degree in English from the University of Utah.
 was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross for his extraordinary achievements while flying an S-3 Viking The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a jet aircraft originally used by the United States Navy to identify, track, and destroy enemy submarines. In the late 1990's, the S-3B's mission focus shifted to surface warfare and aerial refueling.  on a refueling mission with VS-32 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During the flight an environmental control system compartment fire caused the loss of the main hydraulic system and nearly all flight-related electrical systems, but Cdr. Carlson was able to perform a 185 mph, nighttime, no-flap visual landing on board Theodore Roosevelt (CVN (Card Verification Number) See CSC.  71).
