: CPL) has been elected chairman of the governing board of the Atlanta Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators World Association of Nuclear Operators is an international organisation founded in 1989 after the Chernobyl accident to foster international cooperation and professional excellence within the nuclear industries.  (WANO WANO World Association of Nuclear Operators ).

Cavanaugh will serve as chairman until May 1, 1996. He succeeds G.L. "Lin" Titus, president and chief executive officer of New Brunswick Power, who was re-elected to a second two-year term on the Atlanta Center Governing Board.

In addition to serving on the WANO-Atlanta Center Governing Board, Cavanaugh is a member of the overall WANO Governing Board and is on the board of directors for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations The Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) is an organization established by the U.S. nuclear power industry in response to recommendations by the Kemeny Commission Report [1], following the investigation of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 event [2] .

CP&L operates the two-unit Brunswick Nuclear Plant near Southport, N.C., the Robinson Nuclear Plant near Hartsville, S.C. and the Harris Nuclear Plant at New Hill, N.C.

WANO is a worldwide association of utility organizations that have the responsibility for the operation of nuclear electric generating stations. It operates through regional centers in Atlanta, Moscow, Paris and Tokyo, with a coordinating center in London. Each regional center has a governing board.

Formed in response to the 1986 accident at Chernobyl, WANO's mission is to maximize the safety and reliability of the operation of nuclear power plants by exchanging information and encouraging communication, comparison and emulation among its members. WANO unites operators from more than 420 nuclear power plants in more than 30 countries.

WANO-Atlanta Center members include 143 commercial nuclear power units operating or under construction in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Pakistan, Romania, Slovenia and the United States.
