Another example of this problem that has recently become prominent is the Consumer Product Safety Commission, where enough scandals have occurred to attract major attention from the press, and thereby inspired legislation that will give it more staff. My only concern is that the new employees will be hired by Nancy Nord, a Bush appointee APPOINTEE. A person who is appointed or selected for a particular purpose; as the appointee under a power, is the person who is to receive the benefit of the trust or power. who has been unrelentingly hostile to regulation. Wouldn't it be better to give hiring power to the next head of the agency who will assume the office in January? Charles Peters is the founding editor of the Washington Monthly. |
