Attention is increasingly focusing on the genetic and neural basis
of autism's characteristic behavioral and cognitive impairments. In
the first of six chapters, a US researcher poses the possibility that
biologically distinct disorders are being grouped as "autism
spectrum disorder." International contributors also discuss models
of abnormal serotonin levels in brain development and abnormal amino
acid metabolism, a meta-analysis of genes from patients studied by the
Autism Genome Project Consortium, and abnormal time perception and
language development. The most unusual approach employs a snail model to
shed light on the effects of maternal genotype on alternative phenotypes
in humans. The editors' credentials are not stated.
