Cause for type II diabetes identified; growth hormone level may determine insulin resistance.


BELMONT, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--June 24, 1997--AMUR Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that its research scientists led by Fred I. Chasalow, Ph.D., have found strong evidence correlating low levels of a growth hormone growth hormone or somatotropin (sōmăt'ətrō`pən), glycoprotein hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland that is necessary for normal skeletal growth in humans (see protein).  like protein with development of type two diabetes.

Evidence leading to the announcement came from several studies including one suggesting that children with growth hormone like protein deficiency tended to develop type two diabetes as adults.
