Cattingub, Matt: Gershwin 100, with Louie Bellson Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni (born 6 July 1924), better known by the stage name Louie Bellson, is an American jazz drummer. He is considered to be one of the few drummers whose technical proficiency is in the league of Buddy Rich. , Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, and John Pizzarelli. Recorded in 1997, at Audio/Studio D, Los Angeles. 64+ minutes. Concord 4797. What we have highlighted here is a nice stage spread and excellent imaging. The sound is a bit dry, but this tends to make it sound cleaner still. If the disc has any flaws, they would involve the slightly too-spread-out piano sound, in relation to the rest of the ensemble.

A strong point is the way the disc responded to DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  manipulations, particularly the Jazz-Club mode of either of my Yamaha processors. Even the singer sounded like she was coming out of a jazz club's house speaker system! Dolby Pro Logic See Dolby Surround.  decoding was really focused. So much so that backing off the center level by -3 dB was mandatory. Best was the "enhanced" mode of DPL (Digital PowerLine) An earlier technology for transmitting a 1 Mbps data signal over electric power lines from Nortel Networks. It was developed in the late 1990s, but later abandoned due to implementation difficulties. DSP ambiance enhancements went over very well. The jazz-club mode of my Yamaha units dovetailed nicely with the recorded sound, as did the more precise Classical/Opera mode. Dolby Pro Logic was OK, but like with Classical/Opera, it was necessary to back off the center level a few dB to minimize center collapse. --HF
