This is the seventh volume of the Cato Institute's Center for Constitutional Studies annual critique of important Supreme Court decisions of the past year. Coming from a right libertarian (they prefer "classical Madisonian") perspective, the volume's contributors discuss Boumediene v. Bush, concerning the habeas corpus rights of Guantanamo detainees; Medellin v. Texas, concerning the obligation of American states to obey the World Court in regards to the legal rights of arrested foreign nationals; two cases concerning the role of political parties in elections and First Amendment limits on state regulation of election procedures; District of Columbia v. Heller, a Second Amendment case; the federalism issues arising out of Danforth v. Minnesota and Virginia v. Moore; Chamber of Commerce v. Brown, concerning private employer use of state grant or program funds to influence union organizing campaigns; Stonebridge Investing Partners v. Scientific-Atlanta, an important securities law case; Morgan Stanley Capital Group v. Public Utility District No. 1, involving contract law and the western energy crisis of 2000-2001; and Quanta v. LG Electronics, concerning the structuring of transactions involving patents.
